Every year, on the third weekend in August, Centre Street Church throws a huge party that brings thousands of visitors to this little town perched on the rocky coast of Maine. The Machias Wild Blueberry Festival, a major fundraiser for the church, has been going strong for the past forty-five years!
Ellen Farnsworth, the director of the Blueberry Festival, along with a small army of hardy volunteers and local organizations, pulls off a miracle every year. The festival includes craft vendors, a children's parade, 5-mile and 1-mile Blueberry runs, contests, food vendors, a handcrafted blueberry quilt raffle, live music, a comedy musical that runs several nights, blueberry farm tours, festival t-shirts, and—naturally—a blueberry pie eating contest.
